La Fierte (pride) by tidalkraken La Fierte (pride) by tidalkraken
La Fierte (Pride, in English). A bold design worthy of it's muse.

The design of this ring is a bit different, since I wanted to include elements more familiar to the character. Therefore, it's partly modeled following my previous designs, but with the added challenge of a feminine-looking air-force or military signet ring.

Modeled in Maya
Rendered in Blender Cycles.

It's incredible. And I love the partial circles around the band ^_^

That is spectacular. Both the design, and that it passed for a photo until I read the description.

thank you very much! I was considering redesigning it but, as it turns out, the design as it stands now is a perfect balance between pony-inspired and nondescript form. I've actually got someone who's interested in getting one produced in red / white / blue for Bastille day next year.

So, no parallelograms, eh? =P

I tried it and it didn't even make it to refinement. It looked way too hectic. Male ring should be up tomorrow.

At last, the long and patiently-awaited Rainbow Dash ring has come upon us.

Not sure if you remember me, I was the one to suggest 100-bit coins to you some months ago.

I personally can't wait to see the male version of this ring. Most definitely something I would consider purchasing.

I'm glad you like it!

For some reason this isn't being very well received on reddit, and so far the only critique I've managed to get is that it "doesn't remind me of Rainbow Dash". Thoughts? Opinions?

I can always revise the design.

Sorry, forgot to add: Grandiose, but sleek, not cumbersome. For example, you could expect Rarity to wear something that might not necessarily be easy to move around in, or even bulky in nature, for the sake of appearance. Rainbow Dash likes to mix appearance with speed. Make an amazing impression, and do it before they can even blink.

At first glance I want to say that the design of the stones (and the frame in which they're set) is unlike Rainbow Dash herself. The rectangular shape portrays the notion of rigidity, order, and balance. While Rainbow Dash most certainly isn't chaotic by nature (she's no Discord) she is nonetheless not one for maintaining any of the value I hitherto mentioned.

To reflect off of Rainbow Dash's personality (and, to be honest, my own as well.) What do we value? Pride, as the ring is named, is a core aspect. Aside from this, competition, egotism, self-interest, and a hint of arrogance.

What does this say about Rainbow Dash (and by extent, myself)? Both of us want people (or ponies) to turn their heads and say "Woah. That is amazing." Always to impress.

Thus, when designing the ring, you want something more grandiose. Something vivid, that makes people that notice it do a double-take.

Here is where Dash and I differ. I'm the type of person that likes to articulate a plan, and then execute it. Dash on the other hand is more impulsive; "Race now ask questions later." So, when designing the ring itself (not necessarily the cut of the gems), you want to have "Well, what if the design went this way, but then suddenly went a completely different direction?" However, it shouldn't be completely random. Unexpected, but not purposeless action.

I don't know if this helps in any manner, I can try to give a few more cents of my thoughts if you'd like.

I think I can take what you're saying and twist it to work. Also, I like your analysis.

How about the gems being angled? like parallelograms, not like just taking a rectangle and tilting it. That could convey a sense of movement.

The key issue here is that RBD is a dynamic, hectic character and these designs are more classical in nature. Combining the two leaves very little wiggle room, so I'm wracking my brains trying to figure it out.

I'm unfamiliar with the stones, and what sorts of cuts they're able to sustain. Though, yes, parallelograms would seem to make more sense. This is just my take, but I would say to not make the gems any more "square", as in, to not have the ratio in difference in length between the sides decrease. The more rectangular the parallelograms are, the more "sleek" the appearance would be, it would seem to me.

I'll keep thinking about other ring designs, but I'll get back to you.

At first I was like, "Oh, that's a pretty cool photograph."
Then, I read, "Modeled in Maya"
My jaw dropped.

haha, well, it's mostly the rendering engine's doing. Cycles, in Blender, is one of the easiest to use renderers I've ever seen, and it's totally free.

Cycles has a lot of power, I still usually use internal. It's neat, and easy. Still, it looks amazing.
