Do you know how to use Maya? Are you having trouble transitioning to Blender? Look no further!

Mender is a little project I wanted to start: Offering the world of budding 3D artists the freedom of Blender with the base usability of Maya. Throughout using Blender, I've built up a UI that, whereas it might not be a functioning replica of Maya, offers the same basic workflow. I have also swapped camera and transform controls over to their Maya equivalents, so you will not have to learn a new camera system when using Blender for the first time.


- Maya camera and transform controls
- Maya 2011/2012 color scheme for background, 3D viewport, button selection, edges, vertices, and faces
- Maya 2011 3D view camera FOV
- Re-arranged UI to resemble Maya's workflow, including a thin timeline and debugger on the bottom of the screen
- Extra "Render" layout for Cycles node building and rendering
- Knife tool bound to K (imitates Split Polygon tool)
- CTRL + LMB deselect


- Go to [link] and download Blender if you haven't already
- Click "download" on the side of this page to get the Mender .rar archive
- The next folder we're going to use is hidden by default in windows, so go to "Organize -> folder options", click on the "view" and select "show hidden files and folders"
- Extract the contents of the Mender rar archive to C:\Users\YOURUSERNAMEHERE\AppData\Roaming\BlenderFoundation\Blender\2.66\config
- Windows will ask if you want to overwrite the existing files. Click "move and replace".
- That's it! fire up Blender and experience a more Maya-like workflow!
- If you see an empty 3D view window on the right, instead of the toolbar like in this screenshot, hover your mouse over that viewport and press T.

If you or someone you know can script in Python, or have any other improvements for Mender, please add and share alike. I would like to see Mender become a new secondary option for people who are accustomed to Maya.

do i need to change the Interaction to "Maya" in order for Blender to act like Maya?

in theory this should do all that for you, but if it doesn't then yes. Try loading the control scheme in Mender first

What domean by adding Mender's control scheme first?  Also, no matter what I do I cant get rid of a repeating camera view window on the right side under the scene/layer panel. How do I fix that?

Hi, this looks like an interesting project, i'd be tempted to emulate the color gradient in the 3d view as well rather than the flat grey.

In any case I just wanted to mention a resource I put together that maya users in particular might find valuable which is this...

wow, I've been looking for a list of tool translations like that for over a year and could never find it. Thank you! Very cool resources. Would you mind if I included a write-up of your tool translations in the next release?

As for the flat grey, that was more my personal preference. I can make one that has the blue to black gradient that stock Maya has. However, I've been using Maya since Alias Maya 6 and for some reason can't break away from having that flat grey background. It just works better visually for me. If people want it changed, though, I can do that.

I just started using Blender because after 2.5 it became much more user friendly, and had built-in Maya controls. They weren't very accurate, though, so I slowly threw this together.

Blender is a great program, especially when you take the tag price into consideration. I just wanted to help people transition over, because there's a lot of power and modeling tools that Maya doesn't have.

Oh jeeze, I've been avoiding blender just because I didn't want to learn the entire UI and everything, this would probably make the transition from Maya to Blender a lot easier. Very solid, can't wait to try it out and see if I can pick it up any easier.
